Emirates SkyCargo and Astral Aviation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing trade between Africa and global markets. This collaboration combines Astral Aviation’s strong network within Africa, covering 50 destinations through both scheduled and charter flights, with Emirates SkyCargo’s extensive reach of over 145 global destinations using both passenger and freighter aircraft.

Both airlines bring valuable expertise in handling sensitive cargo, including fresh produce and pharmaceuticals, which are critical to trade in and out of Africa. The agreement was signed by Badr Abbas, Emirates SkyCargo’s divisional senior vice president, and Sanjeev Gadhia, CEO of Astral Aviation.

Improving cargo interline

Under the MoU, the carriers will focus on improving cargo interline options and establishing block space agreements to increase connectivity and facilitate African businesses’ access to global markets. Abbas highlighted that Emirates SkyCargo’s broad network and specialized services position it well to support businesses in reaching new suppliers and customers worldwide. Gadhia emphasized that the partnership reflects both airlines’ commitment to enhancing cargo solutions to and from Africa.

Emirates SkyCargo began operations in Africa in 1986 with flights to Cairo and has since expanded its services to 20 destinations across the continent, offering 172 passenger flights and seven scheduled freighters each week. Meanwhile, Astral Aviation, with hubs in Nairobi, Johannesburg, Liege, and Dubai, has been a key player in African cargo logistics for 24 years.
