DHL Group is making a major move to boost its role in the healthcare and life sciences logistics sector with a US $2million investment over the next five years.
This initiative is a key part of the company’s Strategy 2030, aimed at supporting pharmaceutical and healthcare companies in delivering vital treatments and services worldwide. The investment will help expand DHL’s global reach and enhance its ability to offer fast, reliable, and patient-focused logistics solutions tailored to the needs of the healthcare industry.
Strategy
The funding will be distributed globally, with half allocated to the Americas, and the remaining split evenly between the Asia Pacific and EMEA regions. A significant portion will go toward building new pharmaceutical hubs certified for Good Distribution Practices (GDP), increasing cold chain storage at current facilities, and deploying temperature-controlled vehicles. DHL is also set to improve its sustainable packaging capabilities, both active and passive, to ensure products maintain their integrity throughout the shipping process.
With rising demand in areas like clinical trials, biotechnology, and cell and gene therapies, DHL plans to upgrade its infrastructure to accommodate ultra-low and low-temperature storage needs. To support this, advanced IT systems will be introduced to provide real-time tracking and compliance oversight. These systems will help healthcare providers maintain product quality, adhere to regulations, and ultimately build trust with patients and partners.
DHL anticipates an additional US $5million in revenue by 2030 as a result of these enhancements. The company currently manages nearly 600 healthcare-dedicated facilities across about 130 countries, encompassing over 2.5 million square meters of temperature-controlled storage. Its recent acquisition of CRYOPDP—a specialist in clinical trial logistics and temperature-sensitive transport—further strengthens its capabilities in handling high-value, time-critical healthcare shipments.
Oscar de Bok, CEO of DHL Supply Chain, emphasized that this investment aligns with the company’s mission of connecting people and improving lives. He stated that DHL is committed to building innovative and dependable logistics solutions that meet the exacting standards of healthcare providers, ensuring patients receive the right treatment on time, no matter where they are.
