The government of Egypt has unveiled a plan to increase edible oil storage capacity at Alexandria port, aiming to boost national food security. The county’s Ministry of Supply said the initiative will double the current storage from 75,000 tons to 150,000 tons, enhancing the country’s ability to manage and stabilize supplies of vegetable oil—a key staple for Egyptian households.

Boost in supply chain

The project involves modernizing and expanding the existing storage infrastructure within the Alexandria port, which serves as a crucial logistics hub for Egypt. By improving handling and distribution of imported oil, the initiative is expected to reduce the country’s dependence on volatile global markets and improve supply chain efficiency.

According to officials from the ministry, construction will commence soon, with the project scheduled for completion in 2026. The expansion will be financed through a combination of government funding and international collaborations, forming part of a broader national strategy to upgrade storage and distribution systems for essential food commodities.
