Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV), has introduced its newest vessel, the GNV Orion in Morocco. The GNV Orion, constructed in China and powered by conventional fuels with advanced emissions-reduction technology, marked its first entry into the Mediterranean by docking in Tangier.

This stopover highlighted the vessel’s environmental features—offering more than 30% reduction in emissions per unit transported—and emphasized the importance of Morocco as a key market in GNV’s global operations.

The ship’s symbolic arrival in Tangier also coincided with the official launch of Operation Marhaba 2025, an annual initiative supporting the summer travel of Moroccans living abroad. GNV plays a major role in this operation by facilitating reliable sea connections between Europe and North Africa.

GNV’s CEO, Matteo Cattani, emphasized the company’s dedication to Morocco, aligning with Italy’s Matei Plan for Africa, which prioritizes investment in critical sectors such as infrastructure, renewable energy, logistics, and sustainable mobility. The CEO reaffirmed the company’s intention to allocate more resources and vessels to serve Moroccan routes, citing ongoing and future investments.

GNV is undergoing a fleet modernization plan, including the construction of eight new ships by 2030. Among them are six LNG-powered vessels, which include the GNV Virgo and GNV Aurora, scheduled to be operational by the end of 2025. These new ships will offer up to 50% lower CO₂ emissions compared to previous models.

Four additional ships expected in 2028 will be the most advanced in the Mediterranean region, featuring over 500 cabins, capacity for 2,500 passengers, and 3,500 linear meters of garage space. This ambitious plan reflects GNV’s broader commitment to sustainability, technology, and passenger comfort.

Deepening ties with Morocco

Morocco has been an integral part of GNV’s network for over 15 years. The company currently operates in several Moroccan ports and, in 2024, transported approximately 455,000 passengers on Moroccan routes. In 2025, the company aims to exceed this figure.

To support this growth, GNV has opened dedicated offices in Tangier and Nador, while also collaborating closely with the Mohammed V Foundation and Moroccan maritime authorities to ensure the smooth running of Operation Marhaba, which is expected to handle travel for more than 3 million Moroccan citizens worldwide this summer.

In terms of workforce development, a partnership has been initiated between Morocco’s Higher Institute of Maritime Studies and Italy’s Merchant Navy Academy of Genoa to create more employment opportunities for qualified Moroccan seafarers aboard GNV ships.

GNV has also committed to enhancing the passenger experience, introducing “smart ships” on Moroccan lines. Two modernized vessels—Fantastic and Excelsior—will offer upgraded onboard services supported by digital innovations, enhanced Wi-Fi, and redesigned culinary offerings that blend Moroccan and Italian Mediterranean cuisines. These features reflect a strong understanding of Moroccan passengers’ preferences, particularly the high demand for comfortable sleeping arrangements and vehicle capacity.

With these investments, GNV not only confirms its role as a major player in Mediterranean maritime transport but also reinforces its strategic partnership with Morocco, focusing on shared development, economic integration, and sustainable innovation. The company remains committed to offering reliable, efficient, and eco-friendly services, with a clear vision of mutual growth in the years to come.
