The CMA CGM Group has officially opened its first regional office for Africa in Abidjan, marking a significant milestone in the company’s long-standing relationship with the continent and reinforcing its strategic focus on African trade growth.

The establishment of the new regional hub in Abidjan reflects a decisive shift toward placing Africa at the centre of the group’s operational and commercial decision-making. By relocating key regional leadership and strategic functions closer to the markets they serve, CMA CGM aims to enhance responsiveness, strengthen partnerships and support expanding trade corridors across the continent.

Bringing leadership closer to African markets

Africa has become an increasingly vital component of global shipping and logistics networks. With growing consumer demand, industrial expansion and rising intra-African trade under frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area, logistics players are intensifying their presence to remain competitive and agile.

CMA CGM’s footprint in Africa is already substantial. The group operates 91 offices across 54 countries, employs approximately 3,400 staff dedicated to regional operations and runs 33 maritime services calling at more than 80 ports. The opening of the Abidjan office consolidates the company’s regional coordination, commercial management, and customer-facing services under one African-based leadership structure.

By situating its regional headquarters in West Africa’s economic powerhouse, CMA CGM positions itself closer to key shipping routes, port infrastructure, and high-growth markets. Abidjan’s strategic coastal location and its role as a gateway for landlocked countries in the region make it an ideal logistics nerve centre.

Supporting long-term trade and infrastructure growth

The move signals more than administrative restructuring. It underscores CMA CGM’s commitment to supporting Africa’s long-term trade development through enhanced service reliability, improved supply chain integration, and stronger collaboration with local stakeholders.

Over the past several years, the company has expanded its investments in port terminals and maritime services across West and Central Africa, reinforcing its capacity to handle increasing cargo volumes. The new regional office is expected to streamline coordination between maritime operations, intermodal solutions, and customer services, enabling faster decision-making and greater operational efficiency.

As global supply chains continue to evolve, proximity to emerging markets has become a strategic imperative. By anchoring its African leadership in Abidjan, CMA CGM demonstrates confidence in the continent’s economic trajectory and its growing role in global trade flows.

The inauguration of this first regional office for Africa marks a new chapter for the group’s continental strategy. With Africa’s trade corridors expanding and infrastructure investments accelerating, CMA CGM’s strengthened presence positions it to play an even greater role in shaping the future of logistics across the region.
