$1-billion investment aims to boost efficiency and global shipping presence

Global shipping giant MSC has signed a 45-year concession agreement with Nigerian maritime firm Nigerdock to develop, operate, and maintain a new container terminal at Snake Island Port in Lagos.

The terminal is part of MSC’s announced $1-billion investment in infrastructure and logistics across Nigeria, reflecting the company’s strategy to secure long-term footholds in emerging markets as global supply chains are reconfigured.

Terminal details and capacity

The new MSC terminal, to be constructed by ITB Nigeria and DEME Group, is scheduled for completion by 2028. It will cover 30 hectares and feature a 910-meter quay capable of supporting ship-to-shore cranes and mobile harbour cranes, accommodating both deep-sea vessels and barges.

“The new terminal will open up opportunities, enhance efficiency, and elevate Snake Island Port as a major global shipping center,” said MSC President Diego Aponte.

Strategic importance for Lagos and Nigeria

Snake Island Port, an 85-hectare facility operated by Nigerdock, currently comprises three terminals serving the Lagos port complex. The development of the dedicated MSC terminal is expected to reduce congestion, improve logistics efficiency, and strengthen Nigeria’s position in global maritime trade.

As Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria faces chronic port congestion, and long-term investments like this one are seen as critical to supporting trade growth and attracting further international investment in the country’s logistics infrastructure.
