Kenya’s Advantage Air is advancing its cargo transport capabilities with the purchase of two Dash 8-400 Package Freighter Conversion Kits from De Havilland Aircraft of Canada. The conversion kits, expected to be delivered by late 2025, will transform the airline’s Dash 8-400 aircraft from a passenger layout into full-time cargo carriers.

The Package Freighter (PF) Kit provides a structural overhaul of the aircraft to accommodate cargo operations. It includes nine distinct cargo loading zones secured by eight radial spider nets, designed to ensure safety and stability during transport. The aircraft will also be equipped with smoke detection systems and an optional system for palletized cargo, enhancing handling and protection of goods.

Features

The Dash 8-400 is well-suited to regional operations due to its short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities, reliability, and cost-efficiency, making it an attractive option for freight services in East Africa’s diverse terrain.

According to De Havilland Canada’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Ryan DeBrusk, the partnership with Advantage Air reflects growing interest in durable, adaptable cargo aircraft: “We’re excited to support Advantage Air as they grow their cargo operations. Their investment signals confidence in the performance and versatility of our freighter solutions.”

Captain Mohammad Somow, CEO of Advantage Air, emphasized the strategic importance of the move: “This investment marks a key moment in our growth. The conversion kits will significantly boost our ability to deliver cargo quickly and reliably while leveraging the trusted performance of the Dash 8-400.”

De Havilland Canada introduced its cargo conversion program for the Dash 8-400 in 2022, offering three flexible options:

Package Freighter (PF): Tailored for bulk shipments and e-commerce deliveries.

Quick Change (QC): Allows for swift conversion between passenger and cargo roles.

Large Cargo Door (F-LCD): Features structural enhancements for larger freight handling.

With this development, Advantage Air aims to improve regional cargo connectivity from its base at Wilson Airport in Nairobi, targeting increased demand for air logistics across East Africa.
