Africa Global Logistics (AGL) has announced plans to make a significant strategic investment of $43 million in Namibia, by 2030. This investment is driven by Namibia’s expanding oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors.

The Mediterranean Shipping Company developing key logistics infrastructure in the country, starting with a warehouse in Walvis Bay and planned projects in Luderitz, which will support oil exploration and the import of renewable energy equipment, such as wind turbines. Koen Rombouts, AGL’s managing director for the southern African corridor, highlighted the company’s plans to establish an energy unit dedicated to oil and gas services in Namibia, underscoring the potential of recent oil discoveries by major companies like TotalEnergies and Shell.

Logistics industry

Namibia’s logistics industry is considered important for the country’s growth and development. The country’s well-developed infrastructure, including its road network and ports, makes it a potential logistics hub in Southern Africa. Research shows that Namibia’s logistics industry has the potential to contribute 4.6% to the country’s GDP.

The country’s strategic location and its well-positioned ports in southern Africa have become vital for exporting natural resources and supporting renewable energy projects. As South Africa’s state-owned logistics operator, Transnet, faces declining efficiency, AGL and other companies are seizing opportunities to enhance regional trade routes, including exploring potential rail partnerships. AGL’s strategy reflects a broader shift towards securing logistics and export terminals in Africa’s mineral-rich regions, which are becoming crucial amid the growing global demand for critical minerals.
