Weighwell Engineering Ltd has introduced an advanced train weighing system in Tangiers, Morocco, to improve the performance and safety of Africa’s first high-speed rail line. The system, known as the PTW 500-VB2X, is lightweight, portable, and designed to meet the specific operational needs of Morocco’s rail network. Its innovative features will support smoother and more efficient train operations.

The PTW 500-VB2X includes Weighwell’s ptwX software, which provides real-time data on wheel, axle, and total train weight. This allows operators to detect weight imbalances quickly and make necessary adjustments, thereby improving overall train stability and safety. The system’s accuracy and adaptability make it a valuable tool for daily rail operations.

Features

The weighing system was installed at the Tangier high-speed train depot, where it will initially be used to measure Alstom TGV Duplex trains. This project is part of a $183.75 million, 15-year maintenance agreement managed by Société Marocaine de Maintenance, a joint venture between Morocco’s national railway operator ONCF and France’s SNCF. The system will play a key role in maintaining the high-speed fleet and ensuring optimal performance.

The high-speed rail line will link Tangiers and Casablanca, reducing travel time to just over two hours and accommodating up to 10 million passengers annually. This improvement is expected to enhance national connectivity and attract more passengers, contributing to the development of Morocco’s transportation infrastructure.

Weighwell’s Managing Director, Paul Horsfall, emphasized the company’s success in providing advanced weighing solutions worldwide. The company’s systems are now operational in over 25 countries, demonstrating its ability to adapt to diverse market needs. The successful installation in Morocco highlights Weighwell’s commitment to delivering tailored solutions that meet international standards.

Morocco’s adoption of advanced train weighing technology reflects its commitment to modernizing transportation infrastructure. Weighwell’s contribution will enhance the safety, efficiency, and reliability of Africa’s first high-speed rail line, setting a new benchmark for rail innovation on the continent.
