Africa Global Logistics (AGL), in partnership with BALSA, has officially launched operations at A-Berth within Duncan Docks, located in the Port of Cape Town. This move follows the recent signing of a lease agreement with the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), granting AGL responsibility for managing the berth starting April. The collaboration marks a strategic step forward in strengthening port performance and promoting private sector participation in South Africa’s maritime infrastructure.

AGL views this partnership as a key milestone in its broader mission to modernize port operations across Africa. The company plans to make substantial investments in new technologies and advanced handling equipment to streamline logistics processes at the berth. Additionally, AGL is committed to developing local talent through a strong human capital development programme, aimed at enhancing service delivery and reducing vessel turnaround times.

Economic boost

According to AGL Terminals CEO Olivier de Noray, the lease agreement signifies the company’s commitment to supporting the growth and efficiency of South Africa’s ports. He emphasized that managing A-Berth will allow AGL to apply its African logistics expertise and global best practices to reinforce Cape Town’s position as a vital trade gateway. The collaboration with TNPA is expected to drive operational innovation and create new economic opportunities within the maritime sector.

A key component of this initiative involves working closely with Transnet Port Terminals (TPT), which has been selected as the waterside operator for A-Berth. TPT’s operational experience will play a critical role in optimizing cargo flow, improving turnaround performance, and ensuring consistent service levels at the port. This aligns with TNPA’s objectives to modernize infrastructure and boost efficiency through strategic public-private partnerships.

Overall, the partnership between AGL, BALSA, TNPA, and TPT is expected to serve as a model for future collaborations in South Africa’s port sector. By investing in innovation and infrastructure, the initiative aims to increase the country’s global competitiveness in maritime trade and foster sustainable economic development.
