Air connectivity between the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone has been restored after a 12-year gap. This follows the successful operation of a direct flight from London Gatwick to Freetown.

The service, carried out by UK-based Ascend Airways on behalf of the newly launched Air Sierra Leone, marks a significant milestone in bilateral ties. The return leg coincided with Sierra Leone’s Independence Day.

Ascend Airways

Ascend Airways, a subsidiary of Avia Solutions Group—the world’s largest ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) provider operated the flight using a modern Boeing 737 MAX 8 (registration G-CRUX), which offers improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. This inaugural service carried members of the Sierra Leonean diaspora from the UK and international passengers, symbolizing renewed opportunities for travel, trade, and tourism.

The partnership will see Ascend Airways operating three weekly flights starting June 16, 2025, with full responsibility for flight operations, crew, and maintenance. With this route, both carriers aim to strengthen economic and cultural connections between the two countries, supported by high safety standards and regulatory compliance.
