The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has confirmed that its Bayhead Road rehabilitation project in Durban is progressing according to schedule. The initiative, launched in June 2025, is a key infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving access to the Port of Durban and enhancing overall road safety within the busy logistics precinct.

According to TNPA, the project has advanced smoothly from Phase 1 to Phase 2 without major disruptions to port operations. The current phase targets the outbound carriageway between the Shell garage and Rotterdam Intersection, as well as the inbound section from Wagtail to the Langeberg Intersection. Ongoing works include removing worn asphalt, laying new bitumen-stabilised base and asphalt layers, and repairing kerbs, stormwater drains, and channels.

Transparency

The authority noted that these upgrades are designed not only to extend the structural lifespan of Bayhead Road but also to improve its drainage capacity and resilience under heavy traffic conditions. Complementary safety interventions such as clearer lane markings, new signage, reflective studs, and speed-calming measures are also being introduced to better regulate vehicle flow along this critical freight route.

TNPA highlighted that weekly consultations with port users and nearby businesses have helped to maintain transparency and minimise operational impact throughout the rehabilitation process. Acting Port Manager for Durban, Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi, said the project would serve as a catalyst for improved efficiency at one of South Africa’s most vital trade hubs. “Infrastructure modernisation of this nature is essential to sustaining cargo flows and strengthening South Africa’s role in the global supply chain,” he noted.
