bp has successfully completed the first export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1 project, located offshore Mauritania and Senegal.
This achievement follows the project’s first flow of gas earlier this year. The LNG was safely transferred to a carrier from a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) vessel situated about 10 kilometers offshore, where the gas was cooled, liquefied, and stored before export.
This milestone marks bp’s third major upstream project start-up of the year and supports its broader goal of launching ten such projects by the end of 2027. The company is focused on expanding its upstream oil and gas portfolio as part of its overall growth strategy. Gordon Birrell, Executive Vice President of Production & Operations, praised the dedicated efforts of the project and operations teams, highlighting the significance of starting exports from GTA Phase 1 and the creation of a new production hub within bp’s global operations.
GTA project
The GTA project, recognized by the governments of Mauritania and Senegal as a strategic national priority, taps into gas resources located at water depths reaching up to 2,850 meters. Once fully operational, GTA Phase 1 is expected to deliver around 2.4 million tonnes of LNG per year to the global market, while also reserving gas supplies for domestic use in Mauritania and Senegal as local infrastructure develops.
Since entering Mauritania and Senegal in 2017, bp has cultivated strong relationships with local communities, governments, and businesses. The construction of the GTA project has led to the creation of more than 3,000 local jobs and partnerships with approximately 300 local companies. Dave Campbell, Senior Vice President for Mauritania and Senegal, emphasized the pride shared with local stakeholders and expressed confidence in the continued collaboration as the project moves into its operational phase.
