Construction of the Brazzaville-Kinshasa bridge project is set to take shape. Authorities from the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) indicate readiness to commence works within a year.

Recent high-level meetings in Brazzaville and Kinshasa, including discussions between DRC Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Alexis Gisaro and Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou N’Guesso, confirm that earlier obstacles have been resolved. Detailed plans are set to unfold starting January 2025, with the aim of laying the first stone by late 2025.

Brazzaville and Kinshasa, the world’s closest capital cities at a mere 4.7 km apart, are separated by the Congo River. This bridge represents a transformative opportunity to integrate the two capitals, addressing logistical inefficiencies and strengthening the Central African region’s infrastructure network.

Benefits

The road-rail bridge will include a railway line, road, and pedestrian sidewalk, spanning more than 1.5 kilometers over the Congo River. It is a strategic component of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), aimed at fostering regional integration and improving standards of living.

The bridge will facilitate the movement of over 5 million passengers and 3 million tons of freight annually by 2025. Expected benefits include; Lower transportation and business costs, enhanced road safety and reduced travel time, boosted cross-border and regional trade. The African Development Bank (AfDB) is financing the $550 million project while the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) supports the initiative.

A Monitoring and Evaluation Committee, co-chaired by officials from both nations, has been established to oversee progress. The project is poised to become a key regional economic corridor, significantly stimulating economic growth and connectivity.
