Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) has injected R365 million (around US$20 million) into the installation of a new advanced bottling line at its Midrand plant in South Africa.

This innovative production line, which is the first of its kind in the country, has the capacity to produce 72,000 bottles per hour. It will be used to manufacture Bonaqua Pump Still 750ml and Powerade 500ml bottles featuring sports caps.

Investment plan

The investment reflects Coca-Cola’s broader strategy to scale up its presence and operations across Africa. Moses Lubisi, Manufacturing and Technical Director at Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA), noted that the move enhances the company’s ability to respond to rising consumer demand while supporting job creation and local businesses. He emphasized the company’s strong focus on local production, distribution, and sourcing.

This expansion is part of a larger regional investment plan. In Malawi, CCBA recently invested US$15 million in a modern production facility through its subsidiary Coca-Cola Beverages Malawi Limited. In Nigeria, the group has committed to injecting US$1 billion over five years, following strategic talks with the country’s leadership.

Beyond boosting production capacity, the new South African line will also manufacture Bonaqua Still in 330ml and 500ml formats, as well as the newly launched Powerade Springboks Edition. The equipment includes environmentally friendly technologies designed to improve water and energy efficiency.

According to CCBA CEO Sunil Gupta, the new facility is a key milestone in the company’s long-term expansion plan in Africa. He affirmed the group’s dedication to providing high-quality beverages consistently, while supporting sustainable development across the continent.
