DHL Aviation has taken a major step forward in reinforcing Sub-Saharan Africa’s logistics backbone with the unveiling of two fully branded Boeing 737-400 aircraft at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. This move marks a significant milestone in DHL’s long-term investment strategy aimed at improving air cargo capacity, speed, and reliability across West Africa and beyond.
The additional aircraft will significantly enhance transit times, improve delivery predictability, and extend DHL’s operational reach, enabling businesses in the region to connect more efficiently with global markets. As trade volumes rise and supply chains become increasingly time-sensitive, dependable air logistics has become a competitive necessity rather than a luxury.
As the only logistics integrator operating a dedicated air network in Sub-Saharan Africa, DHL continues to scale its aviation uplift in response to growing demand from West African industries. Key sectors such as e-commerce, perishables, energy, and life sciences & healthcare are set to benefit directly from the expanded capacity, ensuring critical goods move faster and more reliably across borders.
“As trade expands across Africa under the African Continental Free Trade Area, businesses are demanding predictable transit times and consistent delivery performance. The two dedicated aircrafts will be integrated into DHL Aviation’s African air network, strengthening connections on critical Africa-Europe and Africa-Asia trade lanes,” added Anthony Beckley, VP Operations and Aviation, DHL Express SSA.
Beyond operational growth, DHL’s aviation investment aligns with its broader commitment to sustainable and digital transformation. The company continues to advance AI-enabled route optimization, digital customs tools, and is actively piloting renewable energy and alternative fuel initiatives across its facilities, supporting long-term environmental and efficiency goals.
“With this latest investment, DHL Express reaffirms its position as the logistics partner of choice for businesses seeking to grow their presence in regional and global value chains.” said Riaan Vorster, Aviation Senior Director, DHL Aviation SSA.
