DHL Supply Chain has entered into a long-term agreement with Fortum Battery Recycling, part of Nordic energy group Fortum, to develop specialized logistics solutions for electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling. The partnership aims to strengthen Europe’s circular economy in e-mobility by combining Fortum’s recycling expertise with DHL’s global logistics network.

Fortum is regarded as one of Europe’s leaders in sustainable battery recycling, operating across the full value chain from collection to material recovery. Its advanced processes enable the efficient extraction of critical raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, helping to reduce waste and minimize the environmental footprint of EV batteries.

End-to-end logistics services

Under the contract, DHL Supply Chain will provide end-to-end logistics services, covering the safe transport, storage, and handling of used EV batteries. This support will ensure reliable flows of materials into Fortum’s facilities, enabling the company to expand its recycling capacity while maintaining high safety and sustainability standards.

Commenting on the deal, Hendrik Venter, CEO of DHL Supply Chain EMEA, said the collaboration demonstrates DHL’s commitment to creating innovative logistics solutions tailored to the fast-growing e-mobility sector. “Our partnership with Fortum reinforces our role in advancing sustainable supply chains across Europe,” he noted.

Anssi Airas, Head of Business Line Battery at Fortum, stressed the importance of secure and efficient recycling infrastructure for Europe’s energy transition. “Electrification depends on sustainable battery recycling within the continent. Working with DHL is a key step in scaling our recycling solutions and supporting a greener EV market,” he said.

The partnership is expected to set new benchmarks for the logistics of EV battery recycling, strengthening Europe’s resource independence and supporting the shift toward a circular economy.
