DP World Egypt has successfully handled the largest-ever specialist vessel carrying slag cargo at Ain Sokhna Port, marking a new milestone in its bulk cargo operations. The vessel, MV Keeper, with an overall length of 289 metres, discharged 152,150 metric tonnes of slag metal—setting a new operational record for Egyptian ports.
The shipment forms part of a broader commercial agreement to handle approximately 300,000 tonnes of slag cargo, a substantial increase from previously managed volumes. This record-breaking operation underscores the growing role of DP World Egypt as a premier trade and logistics hub in the region.
Handling successes
The achievement follows a series of major handling successes at the Ain Sokhna terminal, including the docking of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessel, the delivery of 180,008 tonnes of iron ore the largest in the port’s history and the arrival of a major cruise ship with over 2,300 passengers. These developments highlight the terminal’s expanding capacity and strategic importance in Egypt’s trade network.
Mohammed Shihab, CEO of DP World Egypt, emphasized the significance of the milestone: “The successful handling of MV Keeper reflects the results of our continued investment in Egypt’s trade infrastructure, through our multi-purpose terminal, integrated logistics solutions, and the operational excellence of our team. It reinforces our commitment to supporting Egypt’s key industrial sectors and global commerce demands.”
DP World Egypt, part of global port operator DP World based in the UAE, manages the Sokhna Port complex, including container and bulk terminals. The company is also expanding its multimodal infrastructure with the $80 million Sokhna Logistics Park, enhancing Egypt’s connectivity with East and North Africa, Asia, and beyond. This aligns with the country’s ambition to become a regional trade and manufacturing hub.
