DP World has launched an initiative to enhance trade connectivity between India and Africa, aiming to unlock new opportunities for Indian businesses across the continent.
Developed in collaboration with the Government of India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Ministry of External Affairs, the Bharat Africa Setu initiative is designed to strengthen south-south cooperation by offering a seamless trade infrastructure. Through this platform, Indian exporters will benefit from access to logistics support including warehousing, trade finance, and distribution services, enabling more efficient engagement with African markets.
Objective
The Bharat Africa Setu will leverage DP World’s vast logistics network, which includes ports, economic zones, and logistics parks in both India and Africa. With a presence in 53 African countries, DP World’s infrastructure connects to over 260,000 retail points across the continent. This connectivity is expected to simplify trade flows, reduce operational barriers, and enhance the competitiveness of Indian goods in African markets.
Africa’s import market, valued at approximately $430 billion annually, presents a significant growth opportunity for Indian exporters. Currently, India contributes around $28 billion to this market, accounting for about 6.5% of Africa’s total imports. The Indian government, in partnership with DP World, is aiming to nearly double this share to 12% by the year 2030, positioning Africa as a vital partner in India’s long-term export strategy.
Speaking at the Dubai-India Business Forum in Mumbai, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized the strategic potential of the initiative. He noted that improving connectivity and eliminating trade inefficiencies will empower Indian enterprises to succeed in Africa’s evolving markets. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DP World, echoed these sentiments, stating that the initiative would not only strengthen bilateral trade but also contribute to Africa’s broader economic development by making it more accessible to global trade routes.
