The Nguya Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) vessel is expected to leave China in September 2025, according to Federico Ricco, Development Director at Congo LNG.

Speaking at the Congo Energy & Investment Forum 2025 during the “FLNG Developments in the Republic of Congo” session, Ricco explained that the vessel is currently under construction and will increase the Congo LNG project’s production capacity by 2.4 million tons per annum (MMtpa). This expansion will boost the project’s total production to 3 million tons per year once operational. The Congo LNG project initially began production in December 2023.

Gas monetization

Ricco highlighted the impressive speed at which the first phase of the project was completed, taking only 12 months to enable LNG exports. This quick turnaround reflects the strategic advantages of FLNG, which allows for faster gas monetization compared to traditional onshore LNG projects. Marien Ibiaho, Area Sales Manager for Europe & Africa at NOV, reinforced this point by emphasizing that FLNG projects are typically completed within two years due to their streamlined construction and deployment process.

The Republic of Congo is positioning itself as a key player in the global LNG market, with FLNG providing a flexible and efficient solution for gas production and export. Ricco underscored the importance of further exploration and collaboration with other industry players to maximize the value of Congo’s LNG resources and drive industrial growth. Dr. Tsoumou-Gavouka, Communications and Public Relations Advisor to the Director General at SNPC, suggested that Eni consider partnering with the Chinese oil company Wing Wah, which is preparing to launch its own LNG project. Strengthening such partnerships could enhance operational efficiency and create new growth opportunities in the LNG sector.
