New floating LNG facility set to double national output and drive long-term economic growth
Italian energy major ENI has marked a major milestone in Mozambique’s offshore gas development with the successful hull launch of the Coral North floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoje, South Korea.
ENI, which holds a 50% stake in Area 4 of the offshore gas resources in Mozambique’s Rovuma Basin, recorded the launch event last week in the presence of Mozambique’s Minister of Natural Resources, Estevão Pale, and Guido Brusco, ENI’s chief operating officer for Global Natural Resources.
The project is being developed in partnership with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), KOGAS and XRG.
The Coral North FLNG represents the next phase of offshore gas production in Mozambique, building on the success of the Coral South project, which began producing LNG in 2022 and has already delivered more than 135 LNG cargoes to the international market.
“Coral North will be the second state-of-the-art floating LNG facility to be deployed in the Rovuma Basin waters, offshore Cabo Delgado, north of Mozambique, and will bring to production the gas from the northern part of Coral gas reservoir,” said ENI.
Drawing from operational experience gained through Coral South, the Coral North facility incorporates enhanced efficiency and optimised performance, aimed at reducing both costs and execution risks. The project remains firmly on schedule for completion by 2028.
With a liquefaction capacity of 3.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), Coral North will double Mozambique’s total LNG production to 7 mtpa, positioning the country as Africa’s third-largest LNG producer and exporter.
This expansion significantly strengthens Mozambique’s standing in the global energy market at a time of sustained international demand for LNG.
Beyond energy exports, the development is expected to more than double Mozambique’s economic benefits, driven by increased LNG revenues, growth in local industries, job creation and expanded investments in community development initiatives.
ENI has maintained a presence in Mozambique since 2006, uncovering major gas discoveries in the Rovuma Basin between 2011 and 2014. These include the Coral, Mamba Complex and Agulha reservoirs, with estimated gas resources of approximately 2 400 billion cubic metres in place.
The launch of Coral North further reinforces ENI’s long-term commitment to unlocking Mozambique’s offshore gas potential in a safe, efficient and economically transformative manner. New floating LNG facility set to double national output and drive long-term economic growth
