Ghana’s Marine Pilots have successfully docked one of the largest container ships in the world at the Port of Tema, setting a new benchmark in the country’s port operations. The vessel, MSC Diletta, made its arrival at Meridian Port Services (MPS) Terminal 3, after sailing from Vizhinjam, India.

Measuring 400 meters in length, with a gross tonnage of 228,786 and a width of 61 meters, the MSC Diletta is now officially the largest vessel ever handled by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

Berthing process

The historic berthing was overseen by GPHA’s Marine Department under the guidance of Harbour Master Captain Bramuel Tawiah. The docking was executed with the expertise of a specialized team of marine pilots, including Captains Fredrick Eshun, Bernard Kuwornu, Nathan Quaye, Eyram Amegashie, Frank Annan, and Daniel Nii Armah Attoh. Their exceptional coordination with the ship’s crew and tugboat operators ensured the vessel was safely maneuvered into its designated berth without incident.

Handling a vessel of such enormous scale requires meticulous planning, technical precision, and constant real-time adjustments. The pilots demonstrated seamless teamwork, relying on careful communication and navigation to accommodate the ship’s vast dimensions. The mooring team also played a crucial role, assisting with precise alignment and secure docking to guarantee a successful operation. This achievement not only highlights the exceptional capabilities of Ghana’s marine professionals but also reinforces Tema Port’s readiness to accommodate next-generation container ships.
