The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced that GOL and TAP Air Portugal are the first two airlines to implement FuelIS, a new data analytics tool aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in aviation.

FuelIS is a cutting-edge solution that helps airlines analyze and improve their fuel usage patterns. It draws data from IATA’s Global Aviation Data Management (GADM) platform, which includes insights from over 220 airlines and more than 8 million flights each year through the Flight Data eXchange (FDX) program.

Fuel efficiency

The tool provides airlines with benchmarking capabilities to compare the fuel efficiency of their aircraft, engines, and operations against global industry averages. These comparisons can be broken down by region, fleet type, and market segment, offering tailored insights to guide efficiency improvements.

IATA’s roadmap toward net-zero emissions by 2050 expects that 10% of total emissions reductions will come from technological and operational efficiency gains—excluding future hydrogen or electric aircraft developments. FuelIS supports this target by enabling airlines to identify areas for improvement and track progress toward fuel and emission reduction goals. Since 2005, IATA’s collaboration with member airlines through fuel efficiency programs has led to estimated annual savings of 4.76 million tonnes of fuel, valued at approximately $3.8 billion.

TAP Air Portugal CEO, Luís Rodrigues, emphasized the importance of fuel management in both cost control and sustainability. He noted that FuelIS provides valuable insight into the airline’s transition to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and supports long-term fuel planning.

GOL COO, Albert Pérez, said that managing fuel wisely is not only about saving costs but also about gaining a competitive edge. He highlighted that FuelIS equips GOL with the data necessary to make smarter fuel decisions and monitor industry benchmarks.
