Works on the Isiolo-Modogashe road project in Kenya is taking shape. The project is a transformative infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth in Kenya’s northeastern region.
This 748-kilometer corridor traverses Isiolo, Wajir, and Mandera counties, areas that have historically faced developmental challenges due to inadequate infrastructure. In September 2020, the World Bank approved an approximately US $756.3 million loan to Kenya for the upgrade of a 365-kilometer section of the Isiolo–Mandera Road, along with 30 kilometers of spur roads. The project also includes the installation of a fiber optic cable along the corridor to improve digital connectivity.
Isiolo-Modogashe road project
The project is divided into four main phases: The initial phase covers approximately 200 kilometers, starting from Isiolo town, passing through Meru County, and terminating at Kulamawe in Isiolo County. Second phase extends from Modogashe in Garissa County to Wajir town while the third phase connects Wajir to Elwak. The final stretch leads to Mandera town. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is overseeing the construction, with the entire project slated for completion by 2028.
The upgraded road is expected to stimulate economic activities by facilitating the efficient movement of goods and people, thereby attracting investments to the arid and semi-arid counties of Isiolo, Wajir, and Mandera. Improved infrastructure will aid in addressing security challenges by enabling quicker response times and better accessibility for security personnel.
Communities along the corridor will have improved access to essential services such as healthcare and education, as well as markets for their products. The laying of a fiber optic cable will enhance internet connectivity, opening up opportunities for digital services and communication.
