Construction works on the Lagos Green Line Rail project is slated to begin this year. The Lagos State Government revealed the plans and noted the project aims to alleviate severe traffic congestion, support economic activity, and improve city-wide connectivity.

Spanning 68 kilometres, the rail line will connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone. The Green Line will connect with the existing Blue Line at an interchange in Marina and travel through key urban corridors such as Walter Carrington Avenue, Ozumba Mbadiwe, Ajah, Sangotedo, and Ibeju. These areas, often burdened by traffic congestion—particularly along the Lekki-Epe Expressway—stand to benefit significantly from a reliable alternative to road transport. With the city’s population continuing to rise and limited options for road expansion, the rail line presents a timely solution to growing commuter demands.

According to Transport Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Green Line is expected to drive urban growth. Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, also described the railway as a transformative project that could stimulate development in underutilized regions, including Ibeju-Lekki, Epe, and Eti-Osa. He emphasized its potential to support transit-oriented development that aligns with Lagos’ broader planning goals.

Nevertheless, public response has been largely positive. If successfully implemented, the Green Line could serve over half a million passengers each day and dramatically cut travel time across the city. Commissioner Olumide highlighted that beyond easing traffic, the railway will serve as a foundation for sustainable development, linking people with economic opportunities and reshaping Lagos into a more efficient and inclusive metropolis.
