Lufthansa Cargo has introduced several upgrades to its temperature-sensitive cargo services, focusing on improving reliability, transparency, and speed for pharmaceutical and other delicate shipments.

One of the key developments is the launch of the Pharma Control Tower, a service designed to provide round-the-clock monitoring of temperature-controlled shipments. Staffed by a team of specialists, this service oversees cargo passing through Lufthansa hubs in Frankfurt, Munich, and Brussels.

Customers now benefit from a single point of contact for any issues, allowing for quicker responses and better communication, whether they use Active Temp Control (with onboard temperature regulation) or Passive Temp Support (which relies on protection from external temperature changes).

Passive Temp Support service

To boost the Passive Temp Support service, Lufthansa Cargo is now using thermal covers during the warmer months (May through September). These covers are applied to cargo pallets to guard against heat or cold exposure while the shipment is being loaded or unloaded. Initially, this added protection is available on routes between Frankfurt and destinations like Atlanta, Cairo, Chicago, and Toronto, with plans to expand further.

Another enhancement is the introduction of smartULD containers, which come equipped with sensors that constantly record temperature data throughout the journey. This allows customers using the Active Temp Control product to receive a complete temperature history, from departure to delivery.

For customers prioritizing speed, Lufthansa has rolled out td.Zoom, a fast-track service available under Passive Temp Support. This option offers priority access to cargo space, shorter transit times, and no weight limits, making it ideal for urgent and high-value goods such as pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and biotech materials.

In the near future, Lufthansa Cargo also plans to provide customers with online access to container temperature data at select locations. Additionally, the company is working on expanding its temperature-controlled trucking services to better align with customer needs.
