Maersk has launched the Maersk Trade & Tariff Studio, a digital solution designed to help businesses manage growing complexities in global trade, such as changing tariffs, regulatory pressures, and customs delays. The platform uses artificial intelligence to provide centralised oversight of customs processes and tariff classifications, enabling companies to reduce costs and avoid compliance risks.

After successful trials with major clients, the tool is now available for U.S. imports, with a global rollout planned for August. It integrates with Maersk’s broader logistics services but can also function independently, allowing companies that don’t ship with Maersk to benefit from its capabilities.

Features of  Trade & Tariff Studio

The platform aims to resolve inefficiencies in the industry, where many companies rely on multiple customs brokers sometimes up to 40 leading to inconsistent data, overpaid duties, and missed opportunities under free trade agreements (FTAs). Maersk reports that about 5–6% of tariffs are typically overpaid, while 20% of shipment delays stem from inadequate customs readiness. Furthermore, less than 60% of eligible trade benefits from FTAs, despite the existence of over 650 agreements worldwide.

Key features of the Trade & Tariff Studio include; AI-driven tariff optimisation covering thousands of product and sub-product codes, pre-shipment risk screening to avoid fines, delays, and detentions, real-time compliance updates supported by Maersk’s network of over 2,700 customs professionals, tools to help companies meet emerging global standards, including environmental mandates like the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), according to Lars Karlsson, Maersk’s Global Head of Trade and Customs Consulting, the platform brings clarity and control to a volatile trade environment, helping businesses stay compliant and agile.

This development comes alongside Maersk’s broader sustainability and logistics innovation efforts, including the recent launch of new methanol-powered container vessels to enhance service on routes between East Asia and Northern Europe.
