Climate-Focused Funding Boosts Sustainable Agri-Solar Logistics
Mirova has agreed to invest USD 19 million in Cold Solutions Kiambu (SEZ) Limited to support the expansion of sustainable agri-solar logistics and strengthen energy-efficient cold chain infrastructure in Kenya.
The investment is aimed at improving food security, reducing post-harvest losses, and supporting climate-aligned logistics solutions across the region.
The funding, made through the Mirova Gigaton Fund, will enable Cold Solutions Kiambu to expand its temperature-controlled warehousing and logistics services, with a particular focus on agricultural and pharmaceutical supply chains. The Gigaton Fund is dedicated to financing infrastructure projects in emerging markets that contribute to climate mitigation and resilience.
Cold Solutions Kiambu specialises in temperature-controlled storage and logistics, providing essential infrastructure for preserving perishable goods and ensuring reliable distribution. With Mirova’s backing, the company will further enhance its energy-efficient refrigeration systems, supporting both food and health supply chains while lowering operational emissions.
The facility, located at Tatu City, integrates rooftop solar power to supply part of the energy required for refrigeration and uses low-impact refrigerants to minimise environmental harm. Its substantial storage capacity enables the preservation of perishable products and supports dependable logistics for sectors reliant on cold chain services.
The investment aligns with global sustainable development priorities, contributing to objectives such as zero hunger, responsible consumption and production, and climate action. John Kimotho, Investment Director at Mirova Kenya, said the financing reflects the Gigaton Fund’s mission to accelerate climate-focused solutions in emerging markets.
ARCH Emerging Markets Partners, a co-investor in the project, highlighted the broader impact of the partnership. Investment Director Suki Muia noted that strengthening cold chain infrastructure plays a critical role in reducing food loss and reinforcing resilient food systems across the region.
By combining renewable energy, efficient refrigeration and scalable logistics infrastructure, the project positions Cold Solutions Kiambu as a key enabler of sustainable cold chain development in East Africa.
