The governments of South Africa and Mozambique discuss strengthening economic cooperation, particularly in the areas of transport and logistics infrastructure, which are critical for regional trade and development.

Under the discussions held between the two nation’s Presidents Daniel Chapo and Cyril Ramaphosa, the potential upgrade of the Ponta do Ouro border post into a commercial crossing, which could significantly enhance trade opportunities. The minister noted that both governments see this as a means to stimulate economic growth and maximize financial benefits for businesses on both sides.

Railway infrastructure is also a focal point of the talks. Over the past three years, cargo transportation via rail along the Maputo Corridor has risen from 30% to 50%, driven by improvements in the Ressano Garcia-Maputo railway line.

Efficiency

Mozambique is investing approximately $200 million to expand the container terminal at the Port of Maputo, alongside an additional $180 million for the coal terminal. While passenger rail services remain a priority for social connectivity, Matlombe stressed that cargo transport is the primary focus. With recent expansions, the government aims to enhance train frequency and encourage greater use of rail networks.

In the short term, Mozambique and South Africa aim to integrate logistical systems to improve efficiency and increase tax revenues. Matlombe mentioned that the necessary infrastructure is already in place on both sides, awaiting only a political agreement to implement the changes.

Strengthening cooperation in transport and logistics between the two countries is expected to play a crucial role in boosting regional trade. The high-level meeting between Presidents Chapo and Ramaphosa is likely to set the stage for new initiatives that will facilitate commerce and reinforce historical ties between Mozambique and South Africa.

Additionally, modernizing rail and port facilities is anticipated to reduce operating costs and enhance accessibility for businesses and citizens. The Port of Maputo, due to its strategic location, remains a vital gateway for South African exports. Increased South African investment in Mozambique’s port sector is expected to reinforce economic ties and further improve regional trade flows.
