Vivo Energy Morocco and Royal Air Maroc (RAM) have taken a major step towards sustainable aviation by launching the first flight connecting Morocco and Europe using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

RAM operated its second SAF-powered flight, between Marrakech and Paris, making history as the first such flight to Paris-Orly Airport. The aircraft was fueled with 40% SAF, significantly cutting CO2 emissions.

The two companies emphasized their shared commitment to fostering eco-friendly aviation in Morocco. The initiative also aims to support responsible tourism, reinforcing Morocco’s position as a leading travel destination in Africa.

Carbon footprint

Matthias de Larminat, Managing Director of Vivo Energy Morocco, described the flight as a significant milestone in their efforts to reduce the aviation sector’s carbon footprint. He highlighted Vivo Energy’s role as a key fuel distributor in Morocco and its contribution to the country’s energy transition.

Royal Air Maroc CEO Hamid Addou also praised the initiative, stating that it reflects the airline’s dedication to responsible aviation and lower environmental impact. The SAF used in this flight contained renewable components, including used cooking oils, municipal waste, and biomass.

This composition allows for a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions, with the potential to cut them by up to 80% over the fuel’s entire lifecycle compared to traditional aviation fuel. The latest operation alone resulted in an estimated reduction of 10 tons of CO2 emissions. The collaboration between Royal Air Maroc and Vivo Energy Morocco marks a crucial step in making air travel more sustainable while supporting Morocco’s broader environmental and tourism goals.
