South Africa’s Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has invited proposals for a 25-year concession to develop and operate a multipurpose terminal at Durban’s Maydon Wharf Precinct. The project includes designing, funding, constructing, maintaining, and transferring the facility.

The precinct covers approximately 145 hectares, with 15 berths and an annual capacity of over 7 million tonnes of mixed cargo, including dry and liquid bulk, breakbulk, and limited container units. The site includes two leases totaling 25,125 square meters, one of which is a brownfield site with an office block, main administration building, and workshop.

Modernize infrastructure

TNPA aims to improve port efficiency and competitiveness by attracting a capable operator to modernize infrastructure and enhance cargo handling. Meanwhile, the decision on awarding the contract to operate Durban Container Terminal Pier 2 remains unresolved due to a legal challenge by Maersk after Philippines-based ICTSI won the bid in 2023.

“The issuance of this RFP signifies our ongoing and intentional efforts to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of the Port of Durban. By attracting capable terminal operators, we aim to modernise infrastructure, optimise cargo handling, and strengthen the port’s role as a key trade gateway for the region,” said Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi, acting port manager for the port of Durban.
