Tanzania is set to transform the Sabasaba Grounds also known as Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Grounds into Economic Hub. The Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) revealed the plans and said plans are to make the grounds into a modern, globally recognised exhibition and commercial centre.

The initiative is part of a broader vision to establish the site as Africa’s leading venue for trade fairs, business expos, and investment forums, thereby supporting year-round commercial activities and economic growth.

Trade boost

TanTrade Director General Ms. Latifa Khamis stated that the upgraded venue will be developed to meet international standards, positioning it as a hub that appeals to businesspeople, investors, tourists, and global development partners. The comprehensive plan includes building modern hotels and related infrastructure to support large-scale international events, helping to minimise travel time, lower logistical expenses, and enhance the overall experience for participants.

The redevelopment will also feature a commercial complex with office spaces, retail outlets, and business facilities designed to support enterprises of all sizes. Additionally, a recreational area for children will be incorporated to make the venue more inclusive and family-friendly.

This ambitious project will be executed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, with the new facility expected to begin operations by 2027. At present, the grounds are widely known for hosting the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), popularly known as ‘Sabasaba’, which draws a diverse group of exhibitors and visitors from around the world.

Ms. Khamis emphasised that once completed, the new facility will have the capacity to host a wide range of local and international events, such as business forums, trade exhibitions, conferences, and seminars. The development is anticipated to generate significant employment opportunities, increase tax revenues, boost the construction and service industries, and support local entrepreneurship. Overall, the project is set to transform the economic landscape of Dar es Salaam and position Tanzania as a central player in regional and continental business and investment activities.
