Strategic refurbishment to enhance edible oils handling, pipeline versatility, and operational efficiency
The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has appointed FFS Tank Terminals as the preferred bidder for a major refurbishment project at the Port of Cape Town.
The brownfield development, covering approximately 6,289 m² within the Liquid Bulk Precinct, has a projected investment value of R102 million, including both capital and maintenance costs. The terminal specialises in edible oils and compatible cargo.
FFS Tank Terminals will finance, construct, operate, and maintain the terminal before transferring it back to TNPA at the end of the concession period. Planned upgrades include structural reinforcement of existing storage tanks and the repurposing of the import pipeline, which currently handles vegetable and edible oils.
The project also aims to expand the capabilities of the Nautilus facility and modernise gantry and receiving systems. Once completed, the upgraded pipeline will accommodate new cargo types, including caustic soda lye and monoethylene glycol, increasing the terminal’s operational flexibility and efficiency.
Dr Dineo Mazibuko said the refurbishment is part of TNPA’s strategic approach to diversify operations in response to changing market demands.
“It ensures the security of supply of industrial and food service supplies whilst meeting new market demands for importation of specialty chemicals. This is a vital contribution to economic stability whilst optimising infrastructure utilisation and the commercial viability of our seaports,” Mazibuko explained.
FFS Tank Terminals’ appointment follows a successful Section 56 process under the National Ports Act of 2005. With more than 20 years of experience in liquid bulk terminal operations, FFS is a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor, reinforcing its capacity to deliver on this high-value project.
