Volvo Trucks South Africa has introduced two all-electric FH 6×4 truck tractors into Vector Logistics’ fleet, marking a significant step toward sustainable logistics.
These trucks, designed specifically for food distribution in Gauteng and Cape Town, are paired with refrigerated trailers to maintain product quality. Each truck is powered by three electric motors, delivering a combined 665 horsepower, and equipped with six batteries providing a total capacity of 540 kWh. This setup enables a driving range of 200 to 300 kilometers on a full charge.
Shift towards electrification
To support the electric trucks, Vector Logistics has installed DC chargers at its Gauteng and Cape Town depots. Volvo Trucks has also trained drivers to maximize the trucks’ performance, even amid South Africa’s ongoing load shedding challenges.
Volvo’s Sustainable Solutions Manager, Eric Parry, highlighted the importance of strategic planning to ensure reliable charging and efficient operation. Volvo Trucks’ Managing Director, Waldemar Christensen, emphasized that this collaboration reflects a shared commitment to sustainability and is expected to positively influence the future of logistics in South Africa.
“We are excited about Vector Logistics’ shift towards the electrification in their fleet. Just like Volvo Trucks, sustainability is part of their core values and together we believe this innovative solution will help shape the future of the local logistics landscape,” said Waldemar Christensen, Managing Director of Volvo Trucks South Africa.
The first Volvo truck was born in 1928. Since then, they have grown to become the largest producer of heavy trucks. They are committed to driving progress and shaping the future landscape of sustainable transports. Their foundation is core values – quality, safety, and environmental care.
