XPO Logistics has launched a significant expansion in Morocco as part of its strategic efforts to enhance operations in North Africa. This move includes the introduction of new shipping connections, the deployment of 60 advanced container trailers, and a strong focus on reducing carbon emissions by 10%.
The expansion comes on the heels of strong performance in the region, with the company having completed over 30,000 cross-border shipments between Europe and Morocco by 2024. Since 2018, XPO has tripled its revenue in Morocco, reflecting the country’s growing importance as a global manufacturing and logistics hub.
New route
One of the key developments is the establishment of a new route linking the Port of Tangier with the Motril terminal in southern Spain. This corridor is expected to manage up to 40% of the company’s Europe-Morocco traffic by 2025, creating faster and more sustainable logistics options for sectors like automotive, construction, and retail.
At the core of this expansion is the investment in a modern fleet of 60 container trailers. These units feature GPS technology for real-time tracking and are built to carry higher volumes, boosting transport efficiency by 50%. This allows the company to reduce the number of trips required, helping cut down fuel consumption and emissions.
XPO’s operations through the Strait of Gibraltar already include 400 duo-trailer crossings each month. The new Motril route is designed to be more environmentally friendly and supports Morocco’s national goals around sustainability and green logistics.
Massimo Marsili, Managing Director for Southern Europe and Morocco, emphasized the importance of agility, scalability, and innovation in meeting customer needs. He noted that Morocco represents a fast-growing market where XPO aims to lead through efficient and eco-conscious solutions. Looking ahead, the company plans to invest further in automation and digital logistics tools to support real-time operations and maintain its edge in high-growth trade lanes.
