ZIM Integrated Shipping Services has taken a significant step toward reducing its environmental footprint by signing long-term charter agreements for ten advanced 11,500-TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel vessels.
The total value of these agreements is approximately $2.3 billion. These vessels will be deployed across ZIM’s global trade routes, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices. Out of the ten vessels, seven will be chartered from Containers Ventures Holdings, a company affiliated with the TMS Group. The remaining three will be provided by a shipping firm connected to Kenon Holdings, which had been ZIM’s largest shareholder until the end of 2024. These new charters follow the successful delivery of 46 newbuild vessels ordered in 2021 and 2022, which already improved the operational efficiency of ZIM’s fleet.
Eco-friendly shipping
According to ZIM’s President and CEO, Eli Glickman, the expansion of their LNG-powered fleet strengthens their efforts to lower carbon emissions and supports the growing demand for eco-friendly shipping solutions. He highlighted that operating LNG-capable vessels has brought commercial benefits to the company and will continue to be a strategic advantage as the industry moves toward greener operations.
This development highlights ZIM’s proactive approach to meeting international environmental standards while maintaining competitiveness. By investing in LNG technology, the company is bridging the gap between traditional marine fuels and future zero-emission alternatives, aligning with global decarbonisation goals in the maritime sector.
