Captain Rufus Lekala’s ascent from the taxi industry to chief harbour master is a sign of resilience and determination

In a world where career shifts are often seen as risks, Captain Rufus Lekala’s extraordinary transition from driving taxis to overseeing South Africa’s ports stands as a testament to dedication, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence in the maritime sector. Recently, the maritime community celebrated a significant milestone as Lekala graduated with a Master of Commerce in Maritime Studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

His dissertation, titled “Assessing the Impact of Increased Container Vessel Size for Durban Container Terminal”, delves into a critical aspect of modern shipping: the preparedness of port infrastructure to accommodate larger vessels. Through meticulous research, Lekala’s study has recommended targeted infrastructure upgrades, enhanced planning and scheduling systems, collaborative efforts among port stakeholders, and continued investment in skills development to maintain the terminal’s competitiveness and resilience.

Captain Lekala’s journey in the maritime world began with a pivotal decision to leave the taxi industry and join Transnet, where he started as a Tug Master in the bustling Port of Cape Town. His rise through the ranks continued as he became a Marine Pilot in the Port of Saldanha Bay, demonstrating not just a passion for maritime operations but also an unyielding ambition.

In 2021, he reached a significant milestone when he was appointed as the Chief Harbour Master of Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). Just a year later, he made history by becoming the first Black Harbour Master in the Port of East London, breaking barriers while setting a remarkable standard for aspiring maritime professionals.

Currently serving as the Acting Managing Executive at TNPA, Lekala’s responsibilities extend beyond just overseeing port operations. He ensures safe navigation, promotes port efficiency, and maintains stringent regulatory compliance, all while advocating for the continuous improvement of maritime practices at South African ports.

As the maritime sector evolves, leaders like Captain Rufus Lekala are crucial for reinforcing the importance of education and innovation in keeping local ports competitive on a global scale. His journey is not only inspiring but serves as a blueprint for those looking to carve out careers in industries that may seem far removed from their original paths.
