Commissioning of Tippler 3 signals progress in boosting South Africa’s export capacity and strengthening the bulk logistics value chain

Transnet has achieved a remarkable milestone in implementing its R4 billion Saldanha Infrastructure Project, with testing and commissioning now underway for Tippler 3 at the Saldanha Iron Ore Terminal.

The project forms part of a broader modernisation drive that includes Tippler 3 and other strategic investments aimed at upgrading terminal operations. It represents a key step in Transnet’s long-term infrastructure renewal strategy, focused on restoring operational efficiency, strengthening export corridors, and positioning South Africa as a globally competitive supplier in the mining and bulk logistics sector.

Speaking about this milestone, Transnet Board Chairperson Dr Andile Sangqu highlighted the strategic importance of the development, noting that the continued modernisation of the terminal is a national economic imperative.

“As one of the country’s most strategic export facilities, the Saldanha Iron Ore Terminal plays a vital role in enabling economic growth and sustaining export competitiveness. The addition of Tippler 3 improves operational resilience, enhances reliability, and enables the efficient flow of iron ore from rail to vessel, strengthening the freight logistics value chain,” said Sangqu.

Group Chief Executive Michelle Phillips shared the same sentiment, stating that Tippler 3 is not only a capital investment but also a long-term commitment to operational excellence, customer confidence, economic growth, and South Africa’s future competitiveness.

As Transnet advances its “Reinvent for Growth” strategy, the investments under the Saldanha Infrastructure Project reflect a clear focus on building a resilient, efficient, and future-ready logistics network designed to support inclusive economic growth.
