The first lady of Botswana reaffirm commitment to road safety and support for bereaved families during the unveiling of tombstones for the 45 pilgrims who lost their lives
Road accidents remain one of Africa’s most pressing transport and road safety challenges, but tragedies involving multiple fatalities leave scars that extend far beyond the accident scene.
One such tragedy occurred on March 28, 2024, when a bus carrying passengers from Botswana to the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) Easter gathering in Moria, Limpopo, plunged into a ravine at Mmamatlakala in South Africa. Forty-five passengers lost their lives before reaching their destination, while only an eight-year-old girl survived the devastating crash.
More than a year later, Botswana and South Africa came together to honour the victims during the unveiling of tombstones at a memorial ceremony hosted by Botswana President Duma Boko and his family.
Held under the theme “National Healing, Remembrance and Closure,” the ceremony brought together members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) St Engenas congregation from Botswana and South Africa, bereaved families, government officials and members of the public to remember those who died and support the families still living with the loss.
Addressing attendees in Molepolole, Botswana First Lady Kaone Boko said government’s responsibility extends well beyond responding to disasters and completing investigations.
“The responsibility of government is fulfilled when those who continue to carry grief know they have not been abandoned and are not left to bear the burden alone.”
She said the memorial was not only about remembering the victims but also about reaffirming the commitment to stand alongside the affected families as they continue their healing journey.
The ceremony also served as a reminder of the importance of improving road safety across the region, particularly along cross-border transport corridors used by thousands of travellers and pilgrims each year.
Mrs Boko reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to strengthening road safety initiatives and enhancing bilateral cooperation with Botswana to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
