TransNamib and MSC are working together to expand containerised cargo movement by rail between Windhoek and Walvis Bay

Namibian rail company TransNamib and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), a global shipping company, have embarked on a partnership aimed at expanding the movement of containerised cargo by rail.

At a recent soft launch held at TransNamib’s WINCON Depot in Windhoek, the two companies announced that they will focus on improving the movement of container cargo by rail, while also evaluating opportunities to increase volumes and explore additional routes in the future.

The initiative comes as Namibia continues to expand its capacity to handle containerised cargo. TransNamib and MSC said the partnership is also aligned with the recent expansion of the Namport Container Terminal, which presents further opportunities to grow containerised cargo movement.

“This collaboration with MSC is an important step in strengthening the role of rail in Namibia’s intermodal freight landscape. By working closely with our clients, we are creating opportunities to grow container volumes on rail, improve connectivity between Windhoek and Walvis Bay, and ultimately provide more efficient rail-based freight solutions to the market,” said Kendall Swartz, Executive: Commercial & Marketing at TransNamib.

While the event was a soft launch and an official launch is yet to be announced, TransNamib said it remains committed to strengthening its rail freight offering.

The company said it will continue working closely with clients and industry partners to increase the use of rail for moving goods across Namibia.
