Kenya Ports Authority reaches a significant milestone with the initial cargo shipment to Burundi

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has reason to celebrate, as it recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully shipping cargo to Burundi for the first time. The historic consignment, processed through the Port of Lamu, marks a pivotal development in enhancing trade routes within East Africa.

In a formal announcement, the KPA confirmed that the Port of Lamu has successfully handled its inaugural transit container shipment aimed for Burundi. This exciting shipment arrived aboard the MV Jolly Oro, a notable vessel that carried the cargo initially meant for transhipment via the Port of Dar-es-Salaam.

The cargo, which arrived aboard the MV Jolly Oro, was originally scheduled for transhipment via the Port of Dar-es-Salaam

Due to an effective change in logistics facilitated through a C11 amendment form, the consignment was efficiently cleared for transport by road directly to its destination in Burundi, demonstrating the KPA’s commitment to enhancing connectivity in the region.

“This development marks a strategic shift for Lamu Port, which has been steadily carving a niche as a transhipment hub,” read a statement from KPA.

With this successful operation, the Port of Lamu positions itself as an essential transport corridor linking Kenya to various landlocked markets. The KPA further emphasised that this milestone underscores Lamu’s potential as a competitive gateway for transit markets across East Africa, providing a pragmatic alternative to traditional shipping routes.
