New VTMIS enhances maritime safety, streamlines vessel navigation and supports the port’s growing cargo and vessel traffic through real-time monitoring and digital operations
The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has launched a new Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS) at the Port of Mombasa, as part of its ongoing digital transformation and efforts to strengthen maritime safety and operational efficiency.
The VTMIS is designed to enhance the safety, security and efficiency of vessel navigation within Kenya’s territorial waters. The investment forms part of KPA’s broader modernisation strategy, which is focused on leveraging technology to support safer, more efficient and sustainable maritime operations.
Beyond improving vessel traffic management, the system will strengthen oversight of port activities by enhancing traffic control, resource management and logistics coordination. The move comes as the Port of Mombasa continues to experience sustained growth in both cargo volumes and vessel calls, placing greater demands on navigation and port operations.
“At the Port of Mombasa, we have continued to register impressive growth in both cargo volumes and vessel traffic. The increasing number of vessel calls requires modern systems that can support safe and efficient navigation while maintaining the high standards expected of a world-class port,” said KPA Chief Executive Officer Capt. William K. Ruto.
The VTMIS has been deployed across three interconnected sites: the Port Vessel Traffic Services Control Tower, Ras Serani Signal Station and the Shimanzi Oil Terminal Radar Site. Together, these facilities provide a single integrated operational platform, giving port authorities real-time visibility and control of vessel movements within the harbour and its approaches.
The new system combines advanced radar surveillance, automatic vessel tracking, integrated marine communications, meteorological monitoring, oil spill detection and digital port management functions. By bringing these capabilities together on one platform, KPA aims to improve situational awareness, strengthen maritime safety and support faster, more coordinated decision-making.
Alongside the technology investment, KPA has also prioritised skills development to ensure the long-term success of the project. Staff members have undergone specialised training in vessel traffic services, radar operations, port management information systems, pilotage support and internationally recognised International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) certification programmes.
“We have strengthened both our technological capability and our institutional capacity to sustain and maximise the benefits of this modern system,” Ruto said.
The introduction of the VTMIS reflects KPA’s continued investment in digital infrastructure as it positions the Port of Mombasa to handle increasing trade volumes while maintaining high standards of safety, operational efficiency and environmental stewardship.
