The upgraded 5.4 km corridor is expected to improve freight mobility, reduce travel times and strengthen transport links between Pretoria, Midrand and Johannesburg
Anyone who regularly travels between Pretoria and Johannesburg, particularly through Midrand, knows the daily challenge of heavy traffic congestion. In a move aimed at improving mobility and supporting economic activity, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has officially opened the upgraded K101 Road (Old Johannesburg Road).
The official opening which took part on Wednesday, July 8, was attended by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela.
The project includes the upgrade of a 5.4 km dual carriageway stretching between D795 and the N1 via Brakfontein Road, as well as the construction of three new bridges and supporting road infrastructure.
According to the Gauteng Provincial Government, the upgraded corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel times, ease congestion on one of the province’s busiest commuter and freight routes, and unlock greater economic opportunities for residents and businesses.
“This investment reflects the Gauteng Provincial Government’s commitment to building modern infrastructure that supports inclusive growth and improves the daily lives of our people,” the provincial government said.
For the logistics sector, the improved road network is expected to enhance freight movement efficiency by reducing delays and improving connectivity between Pretoria, Midrand and Johannesburg.
The provincial government is also continuing work on the K50 (Garstfontein Road) bridge and road project, another key infrastructure development aimed at strengthening Gauteng’s transport network and supporting future economic growth.
