Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba says the province is exploring a bullet train project after experiencing China’s high-speed rail network
Limpopo’s vision for a high-speed rail link between Musina and Johannesburg has gained fresh attention following Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba’s visit to China, where she experienced one of the country’s renowned bullet trains firsthand.
Ramathuba travelled aboard a high-speed train from Beijing to Inner Mongolia while attending the South Africa–China Electricity and Energy Investment Conference, held from 2 to 6 August. The experience reinforced the province’s ambition to introduce a similar rail service linking Limpopo with Gauteng.
The Limpopo Provincial Government has already allocated R80 million towards the planning phase of the proposed Limpopo–Gauteng high-speed rail project.
“We want to have our own high-speed train from Musina to Johannesburg, then ultimately Durban and Cape Town,” Ramathuba said.
While the project remains in its early planning stages, a high-speed rail connection could significantly improve travel times and regional connectivity. A journey that currently takes around six hours by road between Musina and Johannesburg could potentially be reduced to about two and a half hours using high-speed rail technology.
Such a development could also help ease road congestion, particularly during peak holiday periods when thousands of travellers journey between Gauteng and Limpopo. Beyond passenger travel, improved rail connectivity could strengthen regional economic integration, support tourism and enhance access between one of South Africa’s busiest economic hubs and its northern gateway.
Although no construction timeline has been announced, the proposed project signals Limpopo’s long-term ambition to modernise transport infrastructure and position rail as a key driver of economic development and connectivity.
