KPA team offloads 1,005 containers in under two shifts, showcasing efficiency and competitiveness in global maritime logistics
The Port of Mombasa marked a significant operational milestone on Monday after achieving its highest-ever container discharge performance.
A dedicated team of employees successfully offloaded 863 containers from the MV Aniello in a single shift before completing the discharge of all 1,005 containers within one and a half shifts.
Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) PLC Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William Ruto, personally piloted the MV Aniello through the Kilindini Channel and safely berthed the vessel at Berth No. 22.
Operations commenced at approximately 3:00 p.m., with vessel planners, crane operators, truck drivers, yard personnel, and supervisors working in close coordination to ensure seamless cargo handling.
Operating in four teams, the workforce maintained a continuous and highly productive workflow aimed at minimizing the vessel’s turnaround time. By 11:00 p.m., the team had surpassed the port’s previous record by discharging 863 containers within a single shift, setting a new benchmark for container-handling efficiency at the port.
The momentum continued through the night, and by 2:40 a.m. the following day, all 1,005 containers had been successfully discharged. The achievement underscores the Port of Mombasa’s growing capacity to handle large cargo volumes efficiently and reinforces its competitiveness in the global maritime logistics industry.
Captain Ruto attributed the accomplishment to a combination of factors, including modern cargo-handling equipment, a highly skilled and motivated workforce, technology-driven operational systems, and ongoing process improvement initiatives.
Together, these investments have significantly enhanced productivity and operational efficiency at the container terminal.
As global trade volumes continue to grow and supply chains become increasingly complex, ports worldwide face mounting pressure to improve efficiency and reduce turnaround times. Fast vessel turnaround is particularly critical for shipping lines, enabling them to lower operating costs, maintain schedule reliability, and improve overall service delivery.
